This Central Kentucky Diamond is a Real Gem!
Spring has sprung and it’s time for the diamonds to shine. The brightest diamond in Central Kentucky happens to belong to the Lexington Legends. Lexington’s Class A Minor League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. This weekend, the Legends played host to the West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The WV Power have become a natural rival for the Legends, as their fanbases are close enough that they often travel to each other’s stadiums to take in the action. On this weekend though, the teams added a little historical flavor to the mix. With both states having resident’s of both the Hatfield’s & McCoy’s, the families that lay claim
to one of the most well-known feuds in American History, they decided to bring that history to the diamond by adapting the family monikers as their team names. The Power became the Hatfield’s and the Legends became the McCoy’s. Donning special jerseys that will later be auctioned off for charity. It is a very unique promotion and it will be happening every time the two teams play this season. For more information, as well as the next dates, check out the article over on the Legends website here.
As for the stadium itself, Whitaker Bank Ballpark offers up so much for it’s patrons. You can enjoy the Kentucky Ale Taproom, rent the Pepsi Party Deck, let the kiddos play in the aetna Kid’s Area enjoy Paris-based pizza from Hunt Brothers, snag some kettle corn, drink a frozen lemonade, devour a funnel cake, and of course there are plenty of hot dogs for everyone!
Once you’ve stuffed your face and you’re looking for some awesome Lexington Legends merchandise, be sure and stop by the Stache Shoppe where you can find everything from jerseys and hats to bobble heads and beef jerky. No seriously, they have a Hatfield & McCoy Beef Jerky and it’s fantastic!
The Legends offer many exciting promotions throughout the year as well. Often times, there are players available for autographs in the first base concourse of the stadium. There are the totally lovable mascots, Big L and Pee Wee. There’s the Jif Kid’s Club that allows all kids 12 and under to get in with free admission on Sundays. There is Thirsty Thursday, where it’s $1 beer and Pepsi night. There is $1 day, where you can pick up concession items for just…you guessed it, $1! Fireworks follow every Friday and Saturday night game. There is a Coach Cal bobblehead giveaway and so many family friendly things to do. If you have a family, a tight budget or you just enjoy baseball, you owe it to yourself and your wallet, to make the trip to Whitaker Bank Ballpark and take in this true Kentucky treasure!
