In its inaugural year, the North Fork Music Festival brought some of the best talent our great Commonwealth has to offer. Performances on Friday included Whiskey River, Trippin’ Roots and Bourbon Branch. Saturday was also stacked!! Hazard got to jam with the likes of Taylor Austin Dye, Sydney Adams, Short & Company and the one and only Laid Back Country Picker. LB brought some good country music and as always, he was treating people right! (more…)
The Cinder & Smoke Fest is our baby here at Capture Kentucky. It was an idea that was born as an opportunity to showcase some of the great artists that we feature here. A way to bring our articles to life, if you will. Last year, it was held in Lexington at Proud Mary BBQ. We had a great first year and we loved the location, the people, the food and everything about Proud Mary. The decision to move Cinder & Smoke was made to allow us the freedom to move to a ticketed event, as Proud Mary BBQ prefers to simply have an open door policy.
Enter Shawn & Crystal Hatcher. They were the gracious hosts for the 2019 version of the Cinder & Smoke Fest. They own Thatcher’s Downtown, a very cool restaurant in Jackson, Kentucky. Thatcher’s isn’t your normal little hometown restaurant. They serve breakfast, often have doughnuts, coffee, beer and barbeque. They also host live music and have been very supportive in providing a venue and wanting to grow their restaurant, as well as a music scene in their hometown. So the decision to move Cinder & Smoke to Jackson was made much easier. (more…)
Our Cinder & Smoke Fest happens this Saturday, June 22nd. Capture Kentucky and Thatcher’s Downtown worked together to create a diverse lineup of artists that we each believe in.
We feel that we did that and then some. We assembled one of the best lineups you’ll see all Summer and it will be awesome from top to bottom. We have T.A. Clayton & The Soulminers, Rhyan Sinclair, Eric Bolander, Chelsea Nolan, Short & Company, Laid Back Country Picker, Magnolia Boulevard and Arlo McKinley & the Lonesome Sound.
That’s one stacked lineup and tickets are a mere $15 in advance or $20 at the door. (You can buy them here.) From 12:30 PM-10 PM we’re gonna be rocking Jackson’s socks off!! (more…)
Join us on Sunday, March 17th as we celebrate the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival on St. Patty’s Day at the brand new Cosmic Charlie’s! From 3pm-8pm some of the best vocalists in our Commonwealth will be performing the songs of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The young guns in Bedford will be holding it down while 25+ artists give their all for a GREAT cause!
Jeremy Short, the Jackson, Kentucky “original recipe” singer-songwriter and genre-bending guitar blazer, has quickly risen to the top-shelf of must-hear players on both the local and international scene.
First qualifying for the International Blues Challenge, a world-wide competition put on by The Blues Foundation, in 2016 and again in 2017, Short semi-finaled both years he’s been there, ranking him among the top 32 independent blues acts on the planet.
Now he’s going back in 2019, determined to make the third time the charm.
“You can’t compete three years in a row. So, I had to sit out 2018, which I think made me want it even more. I’ve spent the year on the road with my band, Short & Company, and a lot of times when you’re not on stage, and you’re four musicians who look like they’ve lived in a van for the last month — because you have — you can feel the air of disapproval. It’s like Segar said in “Turn The Page” — you can hear the whispers of ‘Why don’t they get a REAL job?’ At least, you do in your head, if not from their mouths.”
“Getting to be back in that atmosphere again, surrounded by musicians from anywhere you can think of — Japan, France, Iran, Spain, you name it — the energy is palpable. It’s incredibly inspiring.”
If you’re reading this, thank you. Here at Capture Kentucky, building a strong community of like-minded individuals who share their affinity for Kentucky is the core of what we are trying to do. From that simple idea, the Cinder & Smoke Fest was born and I don’t think we could have ever imagined the outpouring of love that took place at Proud Mary BBQ on Sunday. Especially for an event in its first year with a small budget and a free show. For me, it was validation for what we’re doing. I feel that people are seeing the benefits of us all working together and it’s a beautiful thing.
My goal was to create an opportunity for artists that I felt deserved a bigger spotlight. I wanted to do so by making sure the artists were taken care of and walked away in a better position than when they arrived, that was priority number one for me. I don’t have some magical endless budget, so I knew that I would need a partner. That’s when Austin Brashear, who is a co-owner of Austin City Saloon, suggested that I reach out to Emilee Sierp and the folks at Proud Mary BBQ. Emilee saw the benefit of what I was doing and was almost instantly onboard. We had many conversations and a few setbacks, like Mother Nature forcing a rescheduled date, but Emilee never told me no about anyone or anything I asked for. To have someone that you had just met was amazing, but that spirit is exactly what makes Kentucky great. Her people amaze me on a daily basis.
Here at Capture Kentucky, we do our best to shine a light on Kentucky’s greatest asset, her people. That’s the reason we decided to create the Cinder & Smoke Fest. We wanted to create an opportunity to bring people together while allowing folks that are way more talented than us, to have a stage and a crowd.
Mother Nature was unkind to us in July, but thankfully we were able to regroup and focus on a new date.
On Sunday, August 26th, Proud Mary BBQ in Lexington, KY will host our inaugural Cinder & Smoke Fest. We are bringing in some of our favorite Kentucky bands and artists from all across our Commonwealth. So we thought we’d put together a little article to introduce you to this years lineup, which is sponsored in part by West Sixth Brewing and Ale-8-One.
One quick note: chairs are welcome at Proud Mary BBQ, but no coolers please. This is a free show to you, but the artists are being paid fairly. So please support Proud Mary while you’re there! This show would not be possible without them!
Capture Kentucky was created as a creative outlet for my photography. I wanted the opportunity to try my hand at photographing as many different events and attractions as possible. I simply wanted to grow as an artist myself. I knew that I would eventually end up leaning on music, but what I didn’t know, was just how much Capture Kentucky would mean to everyone else.
On Sunday, August 12th, the musical community came out in full force and drove home just how much the work we do here means. This article has been a huge challenge for me because I want to make sure the community knows that the love they showered me with is truly appreciated.
You are asking yourself, what is a Star City Circus Jam? Glad you asked! Star City Circus Jam is a joint effort between The Revival (Kris Bentley’s (Sundy Best) band) and the Mountain Arts Center. The idea was to bring local and regional musicians and artist together for a day of music and arts. The Mountain Arts Center was the perfect place to host this gathering.
The festivities got underway at 2 pm with musical performances in the lobby by Waylon Ray Nelson, Brandon Campbell and Prototype. Tables were set up near the concession stand for a free community lunch provided by The Lunchroom Project. On the other side of the lobby you found craftsman, painters and woodworkers all with work on display and for sale. It was a great environment setting the tone for what was to come in the MAC’s main auditorium. (more…)
Raised in Jackson, Kentucky (Sturgill Simpson’s hometown), singer-songwriter and genre-bending guitar blazer, Jeremy Short, has quickly risen to the top shelf of must-hear players.
Short was raised in a musical family where music poured out everywhere – at church, the piano, the dinner table – you name it. The son of a rock ‘n’ roll drummer, he first found his professional groove as lead guitarist and frontman for the R&B horn band, Downtown King, and the lead guitarist for Sasha Colette’s red-hot Americana backing band, The Magnolias. Now armed with his own water-tight rhythm section, the twenty-something rounds out Short & Company with the talents of Trevor Litteral (bass, backing vocals) and Taylor Jones (drums, backing vocals).
While Short and Company have built blue-collar audiences, electrified crowds in Memphis, and bested hundreds of bands to make it to the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge, they’ve also quickly become a favorite in the regional festival and club scenes.
