Country Superstar Dwight Yoakam Comes Home To Kentucky For A Wild Ride In Ashland

On a chilly Sunday evening, I got the chance to do one of my favorite things on Earth. I got to see one of the many talented performers that our great Commonwealth has produced, back home here in Kentucky. Dwight Yoakam played to a sold-out crowd at the beautiful Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, KY.

This was my first trip to the Paramount and it was also my first time seeing Dwight Yoakam. Neither would disappoint on this night. The Paramount is a beautifully preserved theater. It’s like walking back in time to a 1930’s era “Movie House”. It’s a bit art deco with beautiful murals adorning the walls and ceilings. It’s also home to the friendliest staff that I’ve ever worked with. They truly made me feel at home. (more…)

Southern Avenue Heats Up The Appalshop In Whitesburg!

After a week of sub-freezing and sometimes subzero temperatures this day all though cloudy was nice in comparison. It was about to get a lot better. Memphis Tennessee’s own Southern Avenue was making a stop at the Appalshop Theater in Whitesburg.

If you haven’t heard of Southern Avenue you need to correct that in a hurry. Tierinii Jackson, Ori Naftaly, Tikyra Jackson, Jeremy Powell and Gage Markey put on a high energy show and Tierinii can sing! Everyone in attendance knew they were in for a treat with the first notes of “Steady Beats” then “It’s Gonna Be Alright” if you weren’t hooked by then there’s something wrong with you!

You May Have Went To Church On New Year’s Eve, But St. Paul Took Us To Church At The Louisville Palace

For the second year in a row, we’ve celebrated the New Year at my personal favorite venue on the planet, the Louisville Palace. Last year, we rocked our way into 2017 with Southern Rockers, Blackberry Smoke. That was a truly fantastic night of fun, but on an absolutely frigid Sunday night, Church was held at the Louisville Palace.

The War & Treaty kicked off the night. I scanned a couple of tracks online before the show, but with the hectic schedule of the holidays, I was really going into their set blindly. In hindsight, that probably wasn’t my best move, but after the fact, I wouldn’t change a thing. Why? Glad you asked. Have you ever received a totally unexpected gift that caused a huge cheesy grin that you simply couldn’t wipe off your face for no amount of money? Good. Now you exactly how I felt the moment the husband and wife duo opened their mouths. (more…)

Does Your Holiday Spirit Need A Jump Start? We Have The Perfect Christmas Show For You!

The holidays have a different effect on many. For some, it’s a joyous season. For others, it can be really emotional. No matter your view of the season, it’s always a time to reflect on those you love.

If you’re feeling a bit like the Grinch, the small Eastern Kentucky town of Prestonsburg hosts the perfect remedy to kicking your Holiday Spirit into high gear. Bille Jean Osborne’s Kentucky Opry Christmas show has something for everyone. You can have your photo taken with the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who. Or maybe you’d like to set on Santa’s knee at the top of the stairs, riding the slide back to the bottom, ala the classic movie “A Christmas Story”. We don’t suggest asking for a Red Ryder BB Gun though, we all know how that will end, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”! (more…)

A Kentucky Tradition Like No Other, Forecastle Fest 2017

Major cities often times struggle to have a defining identity. Thankfully for Kentucky, Louisville doesn’t have that problem. Although some may say that Louisville is schizophrenic. On the Dr. Jeckyl side of things, you have Kentucky Derby and the horse elitists. On the Mr. Hyde side, you have an incredible art and music scene. You’ll often see this side of Louisville proclaiming #KeepLouisvilleWeird. Thankfully for Kentucky, both cultures thrive and survive.

The latter mentality happens to be the target audience for the Forecastle Fest. This year was their 15th voyage and the lineup was more eclectic than ever. Showcasing everything from DJ’s to Rap, Folk to Rock, Pop to Country and everything in-between.

Music is certainly a large part of Forecastle, and we will discuss much of that, but I also wanted to shine a light on what makes this Festival uniquely Kentucky. (more…)

On The Road: Star Wars And The Power Of Costume At The Cincinnati Museum Center Inside Union Terminal

Capture Kentucky is proud to present a new series that we’re calling, “On The Road”. While our main focus will always be all the things that make our Commonwealth so great, we will be posting articles that feature things we see and do within our travels outside our home.

In this first installment, we took the short trip across the mighty Ohio River into Cincinnati. It’s there where we made our way to The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. While the majority of the Museum is under a long renovation, the Children’s Museum and the traveling Smithsonian exhibit that features Star Wars and the Power of Costume are both open for business.

This article is all about the latter. Star Wars and the Power of Costume is an exhibit, that on its surface may seem a bit pricey, but I’m here to tell you and show you that it is money well-spent. Even if you are just a casual fan of the Star Wars franchise or if you happen to be a die-hard fan, rest assured there is something there for everyone. The best part? No Jar Jar Binks! Haha (more…)

Capture Kentucky Presents: Top 10 Do Not Miss Artists At The 2017 Forecastle Festival

This weekend (July 14th-16th), many artists will make their way to the stage in Louisville. They will be filling the air with their unique sounds at the 15th edition of Louisville’s Forecastle Festival.

You likely know a few of the bigger named acts on the bill. Like Bowling Green, Kentucky’s own Cage The Elephant or Breathitt County’s Sturgill Simpson. You have likely listened to artists like LCD Soundsystem, Weezer, PJ Harvey and NEEDTOBREATHE for years. But with any Festival, it’s worth your time and efforts to catch the earlier, lesser known acts. Why? I’m glad you asked. See, music is a journey. A long-winding road (pun fully intended) that more often than not, passes through many smaller summer festival stages, building fanbases along the way to eventually leading artists to that main stage.
