A Kentucky Tradition Like No Other, Forecastle Fest 2017

    July 23, 2017 /

Major cities often times struggle to have a defining identity. Thankfully for Kentucky, Louisville doesn’t have that problem. Although some may say that Louisville is schizophrenic. On the Dr. Jeckyl side of things, you have Kentucky Derby and the horse elitists. On the Mr. Hyde side, you have an incredible art and music scene. You’ll often see this side of Louisville proclaiming #KeepLouisvilleWeird. Thankfully for Kentucky, both cultures thrive and survive. The latter mentality happens to be the target audience for the Forecastle Fest. This year was their 15th voyage and the lineup was more eclectic than ever. Showcasing everything from DJ’s to Rap, Folk to Rock, Pop to Country…

L.A. Guns, Budderside and Sinful Lilly At The Forum In Hazard, KY

    July 7, 2017 /

Kentucky’s Sinful Lilly got things started with their own brand of (as Fredi Handshoe the band’s front man calls it) guitar-driven, alternative hard rock. The Richmond natives tore through songs like “Wait Your Turn” “Guilty” “Jack” a new song “Devil Music and the Record Machine”. The band put on a high-energy stage show with Nikki Handshoe (bass and vocal) often leaving the stage to mingle with the audience, while never missing a beat! Trey Bledsoe, who is a wild man on the drums as you will in the photos below, rounds out the trio.

Collective Soul, Our Lady Peace And Tonic Brought Their Traveling Rock n Roll Show To The Corbin Arena

    June 29, 2017 /

Recently I made the trek back to the Corbin Arena for another night at a rock show. This time it was for a trio of bands that dominated the radio waves for several years. The tour included Collective Soul, Our Lady Peace and a band that I feel was heavily underrated in Tonic.

Rival Sons Featuring The London Souls and Intoxica Radio with Howie Pyro in Hazard

    May 27, 2017 /

**Article Written By Mr. Sam Presley III. Sam is a native of New York and long-time friend of both myself and Jonathan Newsome. Hazard, Kentucky – The Bible Belt encompasses the small town of Hazard, Kentucky. Religion runs deep and strong in the beautiful mountains in which the village is situated, and it is incorporated into the lives of the residents from birth. The people are salt of the earth types; hard working, good neighbors, hospitable, and generous with a kind word for those fortunate enough to make their acquaintance. This is God’s country. Winding roads traversing mountain sides with majestic views are the norm. Small houses of worship line…

The Moonshiner’s Ball – Day Two. Does It Get Any Better?

    May 22, 2017 /

After one of the best days of live music that I’ve personally experienced, I came into day two of The Moonshiner’s Ball with lower expectations. Why? Because the bar was set so high, there was no way day two could top day one. Right? Wrong. Wrong on every level.

The Moonshiner’s Ball, Day One, In All It’s Glory. A Truly Kentucky Tradition.

    May 20, 2017 /

The day began with a total downpour, which delayed our arrival until a bit after 2 pm. After a beautiful drive through the rolling hills and farms that lined Estill County, we entered the wide open valley that housed the 2017 version of the Moonshiner’s Ball. A festival created by and for the Blind Corn Liquor Pickers. In its fourth year, the festival has a bit of a countrified hippy feel. That’s not a knock, just a description that seemed suitable given all the tie-dye, curls, puppies and lawn chairs. Don’t let that taint your vision though, it’s very child-friendly and family-oriented.

Saturday Night Special! Lynyrd Skynyrd featuring Black Stone Cherry at the Corbin Arena.

    May 1, 2017 /

Corbin, Kentucky – Kentucky has produced many musicians and bands that people have loved over time. None on the scale of Southern Rock legends, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Then again, few places have produced a band with the talent and longevity of Skynyrd. One band in particular that Kentucky has produced, is Black Stone Cherry. They’re often described as a modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd, on steroids. They’ve created a sound that’s definitely akin to Skynyrd, but has modern elements that have created a sound undeniably their own.
