On Thursday it was time for another installment (number three of ten to be exact) of the Levitt AMP Whitesburg Music Series here in Whitesburg Kentucky. The beautiful weather and all the local schools being out for the summer saw the biggest crowd yet at the Mountain Heritage stage for what promised to be an entertaining evening of music with Appalatin and Zoe Speaks.
Zoe Speaks with their blend of Folk/Americana/ Old-Time Mountain music and award-winning songwriting was the first on stage tonight. Zoe Speaks is a band with deep eastern Kentucky ties; Carla Gover (Vocals, Banjo) is originally from right here in Whitesburg while Mitch Barrett (Vocals, Guitar) is from up north in Madison County. They were joined on stage by their daughter Zoey Barret on fiddle and vocals. They are presently working on their 4th album Wings with Jesse Wells (touring with Tyler Childers) at the helm producing and engineering, look for it real soon!
Well, I don’t really know what category to put Appalatin’s music in, other than the good category! According to the bio of their website the play “foot-stomping, hip-swinging sounds that organically unit Appalachian folk and high-energy Latin music” and having seen them live that’s a great description. I mean you’ve got musicians from all over playing in this band (Ecuador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Guatemala and Kentucky) you are going to make some interesting music with all those influences. Interesting and entertaining music is what they played. Having recently completed their latest and 3rd album Vida (which means Life) they played songs from all three albums but brought Carla Gover (Zoe Speaks) on stage to sing some of the newest tracks that she sang and played with them on the new record. They also did a very cool cover of La Bamba complete with dancers on stage. They call Louisville, KY home, tour around Kentucky and beyond so chances are they are going to be in your area. Give them a chance go out and take in a show I think you’ll be glad you did!
As always get out and support local and touring bands, buy their music and merchandise. Help keep music alive!
