Miranda Lambert has been on the road early in 2018 on her new “Livin’ Like Hippies” tour. You’d be hard-pressed to name a female act bigger than she is in Country Music. So her stop in Lexington at Rupp Arena on Friday is a pretty dog-gone big deal. So join us for a performance from Scott Said & Backroads in the Civic Center before the show. Then join us inside as one of my favorite bands, The Steel Woods opens up the night. I saw these guys with Blackberry Smoke last year, before their album was released and they blew me away. I’m betting that trend continues. Can’t wait to see them again. Then Jon Pardi brings his many hits to the stage before Miranda Lambert does her best to burn the place down. If you see us, say hey!!
The tour takes its name from the lyrics of Miranda’s song “Highway Vagabond” which appears on “The Nerve” side of her 24-song double album, “The Weight Of These Wings.”

There are times when I do what I do here at Capture Kentucky and I find it difficult to convey just what I want to say. It’s not writer’s block or anything like that, it’s just that some things just have to be experienced to truly understand them. This past Saturday night with Dillon Carmichael and Tyler Booth was one of those moments.
Having said that, I want to try and tell a different angle to this story. I want to shine a light on just how special this show could wind up being. Only time will tell us for sure, but I believe we all witnessed a show that will be talked about for years to come. (more…)
There are very few guitarists that are as versatile as John 5. He’s known for his gothic styling and stints playing with both Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, but there is much more to this guitar virtuoso. He has even written a song with Kentucky’s own, Black Stone Cherry. That track is titled “Killing Floor” and can be found on their ‘Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea’ release. We were certainly grateful that he chose to make a stop in Lexington at the Manchester Music Hall. We hope you enjoy the photos!
Kentucky is known as the bluegrass state. Some days, I’m not sure if it’s due to all the beautiful horse farms or the fact that bluegrass music was born here. At any rate, we’re going with the latter for this article. One of the finest bluegrass bands around is based right here in Bourbon County, which is also where Capture Kentucky happens to call home. That may be a force that would cause many to be biased towards an artist. A little hometown love. That isn’t who we are here at Capture Kentucky. We promise you that we will never just put our name on something that we don’t believe in. If we write about anything, it will be sincere and honest. We also promise that we will never be negative towards an art form or artist. We don’t have time for negativity. If we don’t like something, we don’t write about it or at the very least, we will find something positive to include. But I digress, the purpose of this article is to share our thoughts on the recent transitions that have taken place within The Wooks and how they’ve shaped the live show. (more…)
The Appalshop Theater might be the best 200 seat or less theater in the region, maybe even the state. Literally, not a bad seat in the house, freshly renovated with new seats and carpet, Appalshop is a great place to watch a show!
Watching a show is exactly what’s going on tonight but let me add a mid-February night that found me sitting outside before the show wearing a short sleeve tee shirt. That’s crazy for this time of year, but this is Kentucky, wait 15 minutes and the weather will change! The weather outside, while nice, was nothing compared to what was about to go on inside the theater.
What was about to happen inside was amazing. Led Zeppelin 2 brought the thrill of a Led Zeppelin show to a small theater in southeast Kentucky, if you weren’t there you really missed out! Also missing out on what could be the last “Evening with Concert Series” show presented by Greg Napier at the Appalshop Theater, but that’s a subject for another article. Tonight was about the magic that was and is the music of Led Zeppelin. (more…)
We were all incredibly saddened by the loss 0f T-Roy. He meant so much to Kentucky and her people. We will miss him forever, but at least we have some new songs to help us remember him. RIP Troy Lee Gentry. Kentucky will always love you.
Montgomery Gentry returns to the top of the charts with their new album, “Here’s To You,” which debuted this week at #1 on iTunes Country Album Chart, #2 on Billboard’s Top Country Album chart, and #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart. “Here’s To You” was produced by award-winning producers Noah Gordon and Shannon Houchins and released on Average Joes Entertainment.
With three-plus years since their last release, “Here’s To You,” is proving that it was worth the wait.
Rave reviews continue to pour in including nods by NPR’s “All Songs Considered” which included “Here’s To You,” in its “essential new releases” podcast, and said “it’s very soulful, it’s rooted in southern rock…when you get to the chorus, every single chorus, they just nail it..this is that full-on connected to southern-rock sound…”
Likewise, Rolling Stone Country said the album was “a tried-and-true mix of uptempo party rockers, heartfelt patriotism and small-town nostalgia…”
The Toledo Blade remarked, “It is hard-charging, at times patriotic, and faithful to the Montgomery Gentry sound.”
Sounds Like Nashville also raved, “Here’s To You” is undeniably Montgomery Gentry that fans will undoubtedly love, mixing their signature country sound with tried and true topics that celebrate small towns, unsung heroes and the spirit of America….the album delivers the best of the duo and is perhaps their most diverse album yet.”

Here in Kentucky, horses are royalty. Which is why the Kentucky Horse Park even exists in the first place. A few years ago, the Alltech Arena was built at the Horse Park when Lexington was chosen to host the World Equestrian Games. Since then, in my humble opinion, it’s the least utilized venue in our area and that’s truly a shame. So when I read about the premise behind Bulls, Bands and Barrels, I knew that this event was the PERFECT event to utilize this world-class facility.
The idea behind Bulls, Bands and Barrels is pretty self-explanatory, but for reference, the event has competitions for bull riding, barrel racing with horse and rider and well…bands. There were two acts playing after the rodeo portion of the event, Muscadine Bloodline and Kentucky’s own, Tyler Childers. (more…)
