This was a perfect spring day to make my first trip to Capone’s in Johnson City, TN for Black Stone Cherry. I am sure it will not be my last! Great venue!
I had seen Black Stone Cherry a couple times, but hadn’t seen their opener for tonight Blacktop Mojo. A 5 piece band out of Texas, Blacktop Mojo’s music was a great fit to open for BSC. Their Texas southern rock was just what this big crowd at Capone’s needed. Pulling songs from both of their albums Burn The Ships and I Am, tracks like “Burn The Ships” “Where The Wind Blows” and “Back Home” and a cover that was instantly recognizable from the first notes, Aerosmith’s “Dream On”. A lot of people have tried to cover “Dream On” with no success but these guys hit the mark! The video has over 4 million views on YouTube. Give Blacktop Mojo a try, I think you will like them!
Well, a Kentucky photographer went to East Tennessee to photograph a Kentucky band, feels like there ought to be a joke there somewhere. Nothing to joke about on this night at Capone’s, nothing but loud, entertaining Rock n Roll tonight! Chris, Ben, Jon and John Fred brought that rock and roll to east Tennessee! Fresh off the release of their latest album “Family Tree” BSC was ready to go! Review of Family Tree can be found here. They played songs from all across their discography “Bad Habit”, “Burn”, “Me and Mary Jane”, “Cheaper to Drink Alone” couple of badass covers “Born Under a Bad Sign” and “Can’t You See” and always the fan favorite “Blame It on the Boom Boom”. As always the guys but on a great high energy show, how guitarist Ben Wells keeps bouncing around the stage the entire set is beyond me… makes me tired watching him!! Get out and support these guys when you can. Looks like Black Stone Cherry is playing Northern Invasion in Wisconsin this weekend and the Download festival in the UK next month.
