The Best Sandwich In Central Kentucky, That You’ve Never Heard Of!

We here at Capture Kentucky are always listening and learning about new and exciting things to do in our Commonwealth. Whether it be food, horses, events, bourbon, brews, music, art, venues or a new museum, we want to be involved. So when a friend recommended a newer restaurant, that grew from a food truck, we were not only intrigued, we were on a mission.

We were told about J Render’s, which opened in May of 2016. J Render’s Southern Table and Bar, located at 3191 Beaumont Center Circle in Lexington, KY has a variety of dishes that will make you feel right at home. Well, if you’re from the south at least. J Render’s serves up a Texas-style BBQ, which has a vinegar-based sauce. The red sauce is used primarily on the brisket, pork and even the Purnell’s KY Proud Smoked Sausage. The sauce comes in a couple of different tastes. While the Alabama-style white sauce is used mainly on the chicken. The menu has items such as appetizers, salads, smoked brisket, smoked pork, smoked chicken, smoked sausage, BBQ sandwiches, meatloaf, buttermilk

fried chicken, cubanos and even reubens. While their sides include such staples such as sweet molasses baked beans, potato salad, collard greens, green beans, local sweet jalapeno cornbread, onion rings, smoked mac & cheese and their own seasoned fries.

There is a bar, which has a happy hour from 3pm-6pm and then again on Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm-11pm. J Render’s also still maintains the food truck and has a full catering service available.

All that is well and good, but the reason you’ll want to visit J Render’s is a sandwich born in the food truck. One that has so much flavor, you’ll be hard-pressed to sit still and eat it. That sandwich is known as the “Oh No You Didn’t” grilled cheese. This sandwich has their pulled pork, topped with a touch of red sweet BBQ sauce, their smokey mac & cheese (which includes chipotle bacon), piled between two slices of American cheese, two pieces of texas toast and grilled to absolute perfection. I had the seasoned fries with my sandwich, which were delightful, and we finished off our meal with a GIGANTIC slice of their Maker’s Mark chocolate cake. That item is a piece of moist chocolate cake drizzled with a warm Maker’s Mark Bourbon & Cola Glaze…OMG!
